Rachel_lucas2.jpgSince September 2010 PSALMS minister Odele has been mentoring some students at Maidenhill School. This work is developing and there are now three volunteers helping to mentor young people there. Here Odele interviews one of her mentees, Rachel.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Rachel Lucas, I’m 15 years old and live in Stonehouse. I enjoy street dancing and hanging out with friends.

Why did you have a mentor arranged for you?

Because I was struggling in school and not doing as well as I could be doing.

How do you think it’s helped?

Being able to speak to someone about things going on in my mind is really helpful because I would normally just bottle things up.

What do you think have been some of the benefits?

I have become more confident and changed my attitude towards school. I am now attending school more regularly which I didn’t used to do.

Is there anything else you would like to say?

Yes, it has been fun and good to feel good about myself again. I now have a more positive out-look on what I can achieve and do. Big thanks for all the support.

Rachel has had some challenges in her life but she is accessing support and making positive steps forward for her future. It is great to see that she has more confidence and a better outlook on life, this is enabling her to engage more at school.
